Europe 2022 - Day 4 and 5 (St Wendel Easter Market and Trier)

Sunday April 3, 2022
The kids slept in a little and then got straight to playing. Uncle Ryan took Kylie and Luke to the bakery to pick out some yummy breakfast treats including a pretzel croissant! It was SO good!

We all got ready for the day and took a scenic drive through the country to St. Wendel for their Easter Market. It was so fun! Lots of cute stands with shops and food and beer. We let the kids play on a playground for awhile and the dads took them for ice cream while Lynn and I got Gluhwein and shopped with Miss Hannah!

We then went to see a castle! Burg Lichtenberg was so amazing - the tower and many places were still in tact and it was a beautiful day so we got great views!

From the castle we went to Peter’s for dinner not too far from them. It was a great restaurant with a bier garten on a small lake that had a play area outside for the kids! We had pretzels and meat/cheese with some biers while the kids played and then all went inside for dinner. Wonderful traditional German food!

Lynn offered for Greg to stay home and play with the kids while Ryan and I took Kylie to Trier, Germany. Trier has lots of Roman history so Kylie was excited about that. There was an old Roman amphitheater we were able to tour the grounds of including the basement where the lions and tigers were held before contenders came to fight! It was so cool to see and had amazing views from the top! We then found a place to park in town and found the old Roman baths which were mostly in ruins. There was a walkway overtop so you could look out into the baths. The Porta Nigra is an old 2nd century Roman Gate!

After that we drive to a new parking spot and explored the city square. It was a beatific town square with bright colored buildings. We did some shopping and got a late lunch. We also saw a video about the Liebfraukirche and went into St. Peter’s Cathedral which was gorgeous and is the oldest church in Germany that was commissioned by Constantine! Karl Marx was also born in Trier and it is home to the oldest bridge in Germany! The ceilings were incredible. We stopped by the other Roman Baths on our way out of town and there was a statue of a giant foot - this started Kylie taking pictures with “large things” on the rest of the trip!

On the way home Kylie wanted to find another castle so I went to google maps and found one close by on the drive home. It was AWESOME! Castle Grimburg used to have witch trials which Kylie thought was super cool. We were the only ones there and despite the overcast weather has great views from the top of the tower that had a tiny ladder to get to the tip top!

Bar

Today Kylie took a bar stool behind the counter - asked if I wanted to come to her bar. She was serving shots of grapefruit bubbly water with homemade paper umbrellas #quarantine2020

After watching the news of the mobs breaking into the Capital Building Greg said “mom, don’t these people know there’s still covid? I mean we wouldn’t just go to Washington DC because President Biden got elected” I hate that the kids are growing up watching so much drama and sadness on the news but I know that we can teach them to be better and do better and know that the world will be a better place 💕

Europe 2022 - Days 6-8 (Metz, Heidelberg & Waldmohr)

Tuesday April 5, 2022 Tuesdays rainy weather changed our plans but ultimately it was France day! We ended up driving in the rain to Metz, France for the day. Lynn and the kids and her babysitter Kelsey all come with us for the day. We really lucked out and the rain was either just misty or stopped while we were exploring. Once we found parking we walked thru the cobblestone streets until we found the Metz Cathedral and a cute indoor market. We ordered croissants and eclairs from a Patisserie for a morning snack. They were DELICIOUS 🤤 I am basically ruined for eating croissants back home now! We went into the Cathedral which reminded us of The Great Hall from Harry Potter. The cathedral was so insanely beautiful. The Cathedral in Metz is one of the most stained glass churches in the world!! There were so many intricate pieces everywhere you looked.  We found an Italian restaurant for lunch thanks to Kelsey’s French skills! It was soooo good! I had one of the best salads  with ...
