Tuesdays rainy weather changed our plans but ultimately it was France day! We ended up driving in the rain to Metz, France for the day. Lynn and the kids and her babysitter Kelsey all come with us for the day. We really lucked out and the rain was either just misty or stopped while we were exploring. Once we found parking we walked thru the cobblestone streets until we found the Metz Cathedral and a cute indoor market. We ordered croissants and eclairs from a Patisserie for a morning snack. They were DELICIOUS 🤤 I am basically ruined for eating croissants back home now!We went into the Cathedral which reminded us of The Great Hall from Harry Potter. The cathedral was so insanely beautiful. The Cathedral in Metz is one of the most stained glass churches in the world!! There were so many intricate pieces everywhere you looked.
We found an Italian restaurant for lunch thanks to Kelsey’s French skills! It was soooo good! I had one of the best salads with fresh made breaded chicken on it with a balsamic glaze and the freshest tomatoes and cheese! They also had an awesome cheese grater on the table for everyone’s pasta! Greg got a big bowl of plain noodles that he inhaled - Ryan had lasagne that had brisket and veggies in it - Kylie had spaghetti and meatballs that were delish!
After lunch we worked out way back to the car by stopping at the New Temple which also looks similar to a Harry Potter type building. We found a great photo spot as well right by a canal. We then continued towards the car by way of several chocolate shops and another patisserie! It was a great day in France!
When we got back to Waldmohr Kelsey stayed with the kids while Ryan, Lynn and I went out for happy hour!

On Wednesday, the Dalcolma crew loaded up in our VW Golf and headed east towards Heidelberg! This is a very old German town with a giant fortress and also where my Grandparents (John and Ingeborg Erskine) met back in the 30’s!
We found parking at the bottom of the Heidelberg Castle and had to walk up a LOT of steps to get to the top. Once we got to the top we entered the castle grounds and it was immense and beautiful!!
We toured the castle grounds and had a pretzel for a snack before descending into Old Heidelberg. The square was very traditional and full of some great shops and restaurants. We got some shopping done and then went in search of a restaurant for lunch with potato pancakes. The place we found had outdoor seating and it was perfect weather for eating outside in the square! They also had DELICIOUS potato pancakes so I was thrilled! The kids had cheeseburgers and Ryan had some tasty German cuisine as well. After lunch we went searching for Papa’s old apartment where he lived during his time at The University of Heidelberg—and we found it!!
When we got back to Stillwells we had takeout for dinner and relaxed while the kids played.

Thursday we stayed home to get ready for our next adventures (and do laundry!) - it was raining so it ended up being a good low key day! Greg got Ethan off the bus from school. Lynn had GiANT kinder eggs for all the kids. We also went to the Penny across the street to get water/snacks/food for the next part of our trip! We had Doner for dinner which was delicious!!
